Description:
With an ever- increasing older population the challenges facing Age Concern Leicestershire and Rutland are enormous. Increased numbers of older people are requiring more intensive support in order to remain living within their own local community rather than having to enter residential or nursing care.
This is at a time when resources are scarce. Fewer people are offering their services to Age Concern or other organisations on a voluntary basis.
The competition for grant aid is now so great there is little money available for innovation and new areas of work.
Age Concern does not have the emotional appeal of some other charities. People do not wish to be reminded that they are getting old. They prefer to concentrate their energies and financial resources on other more emotive charities, those that perhaps concentrate on life threatening diseases, are connected with children or with animal welfare. The reality is however that most people will become old one day and in the majority of cases will need assistance in order to cope with everyday living. We currently need to raise £500,000 per annum just to stand still if that were an option!
